Food hygiene rating: 5 out of 5

Cooking over coals is the oldest trick we have, and the Exmouth team behind Loluli's Fire & Fish treat it as something closer to theatre than nostalgia. Their argument is straightforward: the UK is so much more than battered fish and chips. Fish comes line caught from the south west coast, bought in season and in the quantity actually needed, with full traceability and zero waste. They work with the fishermen rather than around them.

Two strands run alongside each other. The events catering side brings the coal barbecue to you, building menus around whatever the boats have landed, cooked over flame and built to be shared. Lucky Fish, the takeaway arm, leans pan-Asian: fresh seafood, bold flavours, fire, and fast. If you have only ever eaten local fish battered, the takeaway is the easier place to start, and the seasonal list is worth checking before you decide.
