Gurkha Restaurant

NepaleseIndianCurry

Food hygiene rating: 5 out of 5

Gurkha Restaurant is the only Nepalese and Indian restaurant in Dawlish, tucked on Park Road a short walk from the seafront. The menu covers both cuisines properly rather than treating Nepalese food as a side note - goat curry and salmon sit alongside chilli chicken and the usual curry-house staples, and it has built a strong reputation locally, rated among the top handful of restaurants in the town.

What stands out is the vegan range, which is unusually deep for a restaurant of this size and clearly labelled throughout the menu: aloo tama, coconut tofu, Bombay aloo, aloo gobi and Kathmandu vatmas made from soya chunks and potato all get equal billing with the meat dishes, served with garlic rice, Himalayan chips or tandoori roti. Service is friendly and takeaway orders come promptly, and the restaurant is well set up for families. It's open evenings only, Tuesday to Sunday, with reservations worth making at weekends.
