The Wrecker's Retreat

Housed in what used to be the Customs & Excise buildings at Hartland Quay, on a stretch of North Devon coast ringed by "soaring granite cliffs", with the Atlantic on one side and the South West Coast Path passing right by. It's reachable on foot from Clovelly, Hartland Point or Bude, by bike, or by the twisty hairpin road down from the cliffs above, and there's a beach shop and seasonal Smuggling Museum next door. The bar keeps real fires going and fills its walls with relics from the area's wrecking and smuggling history - shipwrecks, salvage, and the odd film or TV crew that's used the quay as a location over the years.

The kitchen serves local ales and ciders, fresh seafood and local meats, snacks and coffee, from 11am daily year-round, with lunch and dinner sittings either side. Crab sandwiches are the thing people come back for, best had with a pint of local ale in the outdoor seating, watching the famous Hartland Quay sunsets. Children and well-behaved dogs are welcome, and hygiene rating is a clean 5.
