The Rock Inn

The Rock Inn has stood at the centre of Haytor Vale since the 1820s, built by local landowner George Templer of Stover alongside the row of cottages he put up to house quarrymen working the Haytor granite quarries nearby. Granite from those quarries was hauled down a purpose-built tramway to the canal and shipped out to major building projects, including London Bridge in the 1820s and 1830s.

The quarries fell out of use as they became uneconomic through the 1850s, and the tramway with them, but the inn kept going and has grown into one of Dartmoor's better-known food, drink and hospitality stops. It's now a coaching inn in the traditional sense - hotel rooms, a restaurant and a bar - sitting right on the edge of Dartmoor National Park close to Haytor itself.
