The Pizza Cafe

Pizza

Food hygiene rating: 5 out of 5

Independent and licensed, The Pizza Cafe has been on Queen Street since 1987, when the owner wrote the first menu using flavours picked up on his travels rather than sticking to traditional pizza rules. Over thirty-plus years the menu has been tweaked and re-tested rather than overhauled - some dishes have survived unchanged since the opening, others have been added and dropped along the way.

The result is a menu that mixes classic pizzas with more unconventional toppings alongside a run of Tex-Mex dishes, fresh salads and pasta - a wider spread than the name alone suggests. It's a long-standing independent in the middle of Newton Abbot rather than a chain, which shows in the willingness to keep experimenting with ingredients from outside the usual pizzeria playbook.
