The Market Gate

BurgersGrill

Food hygiene rating: 5 out of 5

The Market Gate sits on Market Street in the centre of Newton Abbot and does more jobs than most pubs bother with - sports bar through the day, live music venue on Friday and Saturday nights, and a late-night spot with resident DJs playing tech and house once the kitchen winds down. It changed hands a few years back and the new ownership put work into the look of the place, alongside adding regular bands and a fortnightly quiz and open mic night.

Food runs to stone-baked pizzas and calzones, gourmet burgers regularly singled out by reviewers as some of the best in town, and munchie boxes loaded with chicken nuggets, onion rings and fries. Thursday is smoker night, when the kitchen fires up special cuts rubbed and spiced for the occasion. The drinks list goes well beyond the usual pub optics, running to premium vodkas, small-batch gins and a run of limited-edition American whiskeys, with Sky and BT Sports on the screens for anyone who just wants to watch the match with a pint.
