The Bay Tree Cafe

CafeBreakfastCoffee

Food hygiene rating: 5 out of 5

The Bay Tree Cafe is a three-generation family business run by Margaret, her daughter Clair and granddaughter Lylah, now trading from 15 Market Walk in Newton Abbot. It moved there from a long-standing spot in the town's indoor market, taking over the old Shauls Bakery premises with an official opening in July 2024 that the town's mayor came along to cut the ribbon for - Margaret's own line on the move was that her market regulars said they'd simply follow her to the new address, and by most accounts they did.

The new site let the family expand the menu: cooked breakfasts and bread from Teign Valley Bakery both joined the offer alongside what was already there - locally sourced coffee, homemade cakes, and good-value snacks and light lunches. It's open Monday to Saturday, 8am to 4pm, closed Sundays, and dog-friendly as long as leads stay on. Reviewers keep coming back to the bacon sandwich and the friendliness of the staff, which fits a cafe built on repeat local trade rather than passing footfall.
