Food hygiene rating: 5 out of 5

Slapton's shop was built by the village, for the village, when losing a shop would have meant losing the centre of things - and it is run by the community to this day, in the heart of one of the South Hams' most historic villages, a short hop from Slapton Sands.

Pasties and pastries come out of the oven every morning, there is a proper ice cream fridge for beach days, and the noticeboard doubles as the village's front page - mobile library visits, jubilee weekends, amateur dramatics and all. Open daily; ring or see slaptonshop.co.uk.
