Salt began in lockdown, when the team behind The Salutation Inn - a Topsham coaching inn founded around 1720 - wanted to keep providing for the community and keep the local boats working. The name is well chosen: salt was a prime commodity in Topsham long before it was a fishmonger's, and the Roman legionaries posted here were paid partly in salt money, which is where the word salary comes from.

The counter is stocked from named boats - rod and line bass, sardines, mackerel, bream and pollock off the Starcross boat Unity BM96, and lobsters, crabs, oysters, cockles and clams from Teign Shellfish on the river. Take the wild fish slab prepared however you like it, or the ready-made end of things: fish cakes, stews, pies, chowder, mixed fish boxes and a multitude of condiments.
