Floating on the River Exe off Exmouth, this award-winning restaurant calls itself Devon's only floating "gastro shed", and the description fits. You reach it by water taxi or your own private craft, which means the journey is part of the deal. The season runs from 1st April to 30th September, so it exists on borrowed time each year, family and dog-friendly for the duration, with the water on every side.
DEFRA permission allows local fishermen to deliver freshly caught fish straight to the restaurant, so the seafood often never touches land and the environmental footprint stays low. Almost everything else is sourced locally too, from Devon producers. Their own gin, spiced rum and chocolate rum are sold online, with free samples at the shore shop. Book for your total group number, babies included, as everyone needs a water taxi space. Bookings from 6pm are over-14s only.
