Crab Shack On The Beach

SeafoodRestaurant

Food hygiene rating pending

The Crab Shack sits on Teignmouth's back beach, just off Queen Street, a small restaurant built entirely around fresh local seafood and shellfish. Scallops and oysters come simply cooked, crab sandwiches are a lunchtime staple, and the crab linguine - loaded with garlic and chilli heat - has become the dish regulars order without checking the specials board. A confit pork terrine breaks up the seafood-only run, and the fish specials change with what's landed - a bream dish served with a buttery prawn curry sauce has become one of the kitchen's signatures.

The room is small and informal, more beach hut than restaurant, and it fills up fast on weekend evenings. Drinks run to pink prosecco, draught beer and white wine rather than a long list - simple enough to match the food. It's open Wednesday to Sunday evenings only, closed Monday and Tuesday, and bookings are by phone rather than online, in keeping with the no-fuss approach. Given the location - literally on the beach - and the small covers count, booking ahead is worth doing if you have your heart set on a table.
