Food hygiene rating: 5 out of 5

Bumble and Bee is a tea room in Manor Gardens in Exmouth, a short walk from the seafront, run by Debs and Toby Quine along with their two sons, who the cafe credits as chief cake tasters. It's the kind of place built from a long-held ambition to run a tea room rather than a chain concept, and that shows in the mismatched furniture, quirky lamps and local artwork on the walls rather than a fitted-out corporate look.

The kitchen bakes its own cakes and scones daily, including its Great Taste Award-winning honey and lavender scone, and builds cream teas, sandwiches and platters around organic and locally sourced ingredients wherever it can. Coffee is taken seriously too, alongside a wider tea selection. Food runs from 9am to 3pm, seven days a week, with the cafe itself open later into the afternoon depending on the season. It's earned a loyal following as one of Exmouth's better-regarded independent cafes, prized for its relaxed, unhurried pace as much as for the baking.
