Britannia @ The Beach sits directly on the beach at Beesands, between Torcross and Hallsands. Locals call it The Shack - the building spent almost 40 years as the working base for Nick and Anita Hutchings' fishing business, first as a bait store and then, from the 1990s, as the home of Britannia Shellfish. When the shellfish operation outgrew the site, the family turned it into a licensed café and restaurant instead, keeping the same catch-to-plate seafood at the centre of the menu - dishes like monkfish carbonara and pan-fried scallops with smoked bacon and spinach, both featured in The Devon Cook Book.
The shack has been rebuilt to survive the storms that hit this stretch of coast, including the winter storms of 2014 and Storm Emma in 2018, and now runs close to year-round with only short closures either side of Christmas and New Year. It's licensed, dog-friendly, and open for both sit-down meals and takeaway, with a couple of quieter takeaway-only days a week in summer. The restaurant holds a 5-star food hygiene rating.
